Background
For several reasons (mostly death) the Nigerian Electoral Umpire, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled and held by-elections into many legislative houses across 13 states in the country on the 16th of August 2025 to fill vacant seats in these houses.
As at Monday 18th August, two days after the by-elections, results have been announced for 11 out of the 13 states involved in the exercise. The two states yet to be declared are Enugu ( where widespread irregularities marred the election) and Zamfara ( which was declared inconclusive because registered voters in the polling units that were cancelled for various reasons exceeds the difference in the margin of lead by leading political party over the next in line)

APC maintains a dominance at the polls with 12 out of 16 results released so far.
Even erstwhile opposition states like Taraba and Adamawa fell to the APC. And Kaduna despite El Rufai 's active involvement , fell to APC and not SDP or ADC.
Makinde retained Oyo state for PDP's sole victory and Soludo consolidated his party APGA s hold on Anambra state with a historic landslide victory at the two polls held in the state (Senate and HoA)
In Edo, Sen Monday Okpebholo and his godfather Sen Adams Oshiomole affirmed their control of the state for APC by winning the two seats contested (Senate, that was vacated by the Gov and HoR)
The APC, whether by hook or by crook, is speedily dominating the political space in Nigeria, suffocating all other political parties and the country is on the path to becoming a one party state before the 2027 general election year.
This by election also proved that the ADC the much touted credible alternative is yet to make its impact felt. Nothing much has changed after Sen David Mark 's emergence as the party s national Chairman and the fulcrum for organized opposition.
The SDP did not fare better and the LP which two years ago would have put up a good show and won at least 3 of these 16 seats, was not on the ballot at all, all thanks to it's inability to manage its newfound success.
It's still APC all the way!!!!
