The Anambra Central Senatorial Zone of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned in the strongest terms, the attack on and attempted assissination of the party's leader Mr Peter Obi and other members of the ADC at Benin, Edo state as reported in the media yesterday.
In a press release jointly signed by it's zonal chairman Honorable Chimezie Iloani and Publicity Secretary Emma Asiegbunam, the zone lamented that the reported attack marks one of the lowest and most dangerous dimensions of democracy under the APC and Tinubu led federal government and shows that the APC led government has not only failed in securing lives and properties in Nigeria but is most times, actively complicit in the ongoing widespread insecurity in the country.
Relating the attack to the Edo state governor (Senator Monday Okpebholo) 's earlier threat that Peter Obi's safety cannot be guaranteed in the state any time he visits, the zone warned that no harm should befall either Peter Obi or any member of the ADC in the state. It vowed to hold the state Governor personally accountable if any harm befalls any party member in the state at any time. The zone called on the security agencies especially the Police to urgently fish out, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack and berated the force for not preventing the attack in the first place.
Warning that democracy is under threat in Nigeria, It called on the international community to take note of the roles of the Edo state governor, the police and the APC in the attempt to destroy democracy in the country.
According to the zone, " The APC government at the states and federal levels have failed Nigeria and have nothing good to offer. Therefore Nigerians should actively team up and vote out the APC in all upcoming elections by joining and supporting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) which is the most credible alternative."
The zone commiserated with the ADC in Edo state and with those that were reportedly injured in the attack and urged the people of Edo state not to relent in their support of the ADC.
Recall that Peter Obi who hails from Agulu in Anaocha local government under Anambra Central senatorial zone, was attacked and shot at by some armed hoodlums in Benin, Edo state when he went to commission the party s state Secretariat and also formally welcome former Labour party s gubernatorial candidate in the past election, Olumide Apata , to the party. The hoodlums who were armed with shotguns, scattered the event, shot at party faithfuls, damaged cars and other properties and later shot at the resident of former governor John Oyeigun where Peter Obi was being hosted. Peter Obi was fortunately, not injured in the attack.
