Comrade Ikechukwu Ikeobi, INC State Chairman
By Emma Asie
The chairman of Igbo National Council (INC), Anambra state Chapter Comrade Obiegbu Ikechukwu Ikeobi has lamented that though the South East deserves better deal in the forthcoming 10th National Assembly, the zone may be denied the leadership of that legislative arm of government.
He made the statement when he featured as a guest on Alpha Radio 106.5Fm s Political Heat anchored by Emma Asiegbunam (Mr E on the Mic) recently.
According to Comrade Obiegbu Ikechukwu Ikeobi who is also a key player in politics, the leadership of the forthcoming National Assembly, particularly the Senate President should be exclusively reserved for the South East and that the northern region generally and any other region ought not to be in the contest for the position. However, due to the antics of persons who he labelled as the "Cabals" the south east may be unjustly denied that position due to the ongoing marginalization and sidelining of the Igbos in national politics which was orchestrated by the incumbent administration of President Buhari. He lamented that the south east may fare worse under the incoming Tinubu administration and the denial of the Senate Presidency may be just the first shot.
Despite the south east not voting for the party that was eventually declared winner of the presidential election (the APC) Comrade Obiegbu called for more inclusiveness of the region in national affairs since in his own words "What we practice is executive presidential system of government but that doesn't mean that elected president should serve the interest of only those that voted for him. No. Once elected, in a democratic system, the president becomes a president for all and should carry everyone along and involve every region equally in his administration".
On the national elections, he lambasted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for allowing itself to be used by the "Cabals" to conduct the worst election ever in Nigeria s history. He hoped that the courts will correct the anomalies in the election and grant victory to the rightful candidate , Mr Peter Obi who he said Nigerians unanimously and massively voted for.
Responding to a caller who preferred that the north should produce the Senate President since no south easterner was seriously contending Comrade Ikeobi observed that the call was made out of anger and opined that Senator Godswill Akpabio who had been anointed by the "Cabals" may eventually emerge as the Senate President ahead of Sen Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen Osita Isunazo and Gov Dave Umahi. He predicted that Sen Orji Uzor Kalu may eventually be given the post of Majority Leader of the Senate.
On the activities of the Igbo National Council (INC) which he chairs in Anambra state, Comrade Ikeobi who also doubles as the Njikoka LGA chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, called on Igbos to love themselves and to look out for interest of their kinsmen and their region (onye aghana nwanneya). He called on Igbos to promote Igbo language and culture adding that these are the cardinal goals and focal activities of the Council. He further called for the accelerated infrastructural and industrial development of the south east by Igbos in diaspora so that "the Igboman can be empowered to live the life he deserves as a member of the most blessed race on earth".
